Case Studies - TransportationLondon Underground Metropolitan Line Control RoomOn behalf of London Underground Ltd (LUL), Metronet Rail SSL commissioned IPC (a proven telecommunications company in the realm of banking) to undertake the task of installing a new telephone system for the Metropolitan line Control room, linking all the signal telephones and communication rooms. Secure Vision was approached because of its experience of working on the track and its expertise in railway communications. ![]() Phone sign installation in open section of track near Wembley Park
The scope of works outlined to Secure Vision was to install 109 'come to phone' (CTP) signs along the Metropolitan Line from Aldgate to Preston Road. It was also necessary to change over and commission signal telephone circuits from the old system to the new system at 5 secure communication rooms (IMR's) along the line. The works were broken down into four phases all of which had to be carried out so as not to interrupt service of the Metropolitan Line. Firstly a full survey was carried out trackside liasing with LUL as to proposed locations for the CTP signs. Secondly Secure Vision, liaising directly with a telecommunications company, designed the CTP signs overcoming various problems associated with track working and LUL approval. The signs had to be able to visually alert a train driver whilst stopped at a signal as well as survive the hostile track environment. ![]() Installation showing proximity of Phone sign to Signal Telephone
Thirdly, once IPC had installed their Main equipment in the control room at Baker Street and the satellite equipment in the 5 IMR's along the line, Secure Vision attended site to test and commission the changeover from the old system to the new system within these IMR's. Last of all, the 'Come To Phone Signs' themselves were installed. During the night shift, staff installed bracketry and connected the signs into the existing signal telephones. This safety critical project was completed over a period of 2 years with Secure Vision providing key skills & project management to successfully hand over this important project to Metronet on behalf of LUL. |
